Bubble Bobble C64 Remastered: A New Life for a Retro Classic

Bubble Bobble C64 Remastered  is a stunning fan-made remaster of the Commodore 64 version of Taito's legendary arcade game, originally released in 1987 by Software Creations and Firebird. This project, led by Davide Bottino—known for Toki C64 Remastered and a contributor to Zzap! Magazine Italia—transforms the beloved C64 version with completely new graphics, faithfully redrawn from the original arcade game, while preserving the addictive gameplay that made Bubble Bobble a timeless hit. Released in its first week, version 1.0 on October 6, 2025, it has already surpassed 2,000 downloads, receiving praise from the retro gaming community for bridging the gap between the home port and the arcade masterpiece.

The Origins of Bubble Bobble: An Arcade Legend on C64

Bubble Bobble  burst onto the scene in 1986 as Taito's charming platformer starring twin dinosaurs Bub and Bob, who trap enemies in bubbles and pop them to progress through 100 colorful levels. The gameplay loop is simple yet endlessly replayable: jump, shoot bubbles, collect fruit and power-ups like water jets or rapid fire, and unlock secrets such as hidden doors leading to bonus stages. The C64 version, coded by Stephen Ruddy with graphics by Andrew R. Threlfall and music by Peter Clarke, was hailed as one of the platform's best games despite simplifications such as reduced enemy behavior and a slightly slower pace than the arcade version. It captured the essence with vibrant sprites, catchy chiptunes, and cooperative multiplayer, but lacked arcade fidelity in visuals and mechanics—shortcomings that the remaster elegantly addresses.

Davide Bottino's passion project stems from childhood memories: "I was 11 years old when I first saw a bootleg cassette called Bolle Bolle... those vibrant colors, eccentric characters, and stellar gameplay hooked me instantly." Years of comparing emulations revealed opportunities: the graphics could be better matched to the arcade, they needed optimization for CRT and modern screens, and minor adjustments like player speed would improve the flow. Thus,  Bubble Bobble C64 Remastered was born  —not a complete rewrite, but a meticulous hack that injects arcade authenticity without altering the soul of the original code.

Key Improvements in Version 1.0: Graphics Revolution

The star attraction is the complete visual redesign. Every sprite—from Bub and Bob to enemies, the final boss, and even "Pon" the exploding sound effect—has been redrawn pixel by pixel directly from arcade assets. The levels boast complete or polished redesigns: many now use three colors instead of two, food items like peaches and grapes correctly drop from exploding enemies, and bonuses feel more appealing with fresh variations. Secret and teleportation doors have distinct graphics, potions and bombs correct color inaccuracies (goodbye green flashes!), and the font screams authentic Taito style.

A new intro sets the tone: a fan-made loading screen by Simon Marson, a remastered recreation of the arcade theme by Aldo Chiummo, and code by Antonio Savona. The continue system is reinvented—no more split-second timing! Press it whenever you want after Game Over with available credits. These tweaks, handled by hacker Victor Widell, ensure the game shines on real C64 hardware, Vice emulators, NTSC/PAL setups, and modern displays.

Technical limitations remain: it's a hack, so memory is limited, restricting deep changes like full reverse-engineering. But this containment keeps it authentic, celebrating the original while elevating it.

Gameplay Analysis: Timeless Addictiveness Perfected

The core mechanics remain pure: control Bub/Bob with a joystick (keyboard for menus), trap foes in bubbles, scour them for points/fruit, and clear levels before time runs out. Power-ups abound—extend bubble range, accelerate jumps, invincibility mode—and secrets reward exploration, such as positioning yourself for cross-platform jets in level 13, "Heart." Co-op shines: two players face the mayhem together, perfect for nostalgic dates, as one reviewer noted: "My fiancée loved it as a kid; now we play it together."

The remaster's fixes elevate the strategy. No more exploits like bugs that let you kill through walls (though some persist, sparking debate). NTSC runs smoothly, and the upcoming v1.1 promises fire button launch (no keyboard required!), two-button jump, and attract mode for CRT demos—thanks to contributors like crystalct from Lemon64. Sessions average an hour, but 100 more secret levels demand mastery; players report reaching level 32 as a milestone.

Community Reception

The page is brimming with enthusiasm. Reviews praise: "Excellent port... 10/10," "Great remaster... I love the fixed continue," and there are videos from Retro News Flash and Magisthan's Spielekiste. The developers are actively interacting: Q to exit endless post-death screens, drag-and-drop instructions for Vice for newcomers. Italian fans exclaim "lavoro spettacolo!" while global fans request C128 speed boosts or sound effects—plans depend on the team's growth.

Promotions arrive: longplays, livestreams (German review at 1:26:33), and mentions on X. Downloads quickly surpass 2,000, with requests for tape loaders and fullscreen tweaks, but devs note that the play area exactly matches the arcade width, limiting changes.
